Description

The painting shows a lush still life, arranged around a large bouquet of flowers rising from a central vessel. Red, pink, yellow, white, and violet flowers intertwine with dense green foliage, forming a vibrant mass that fills the upper part of the composition. Beneath them, a table holds vessels and fruit of various sizes: oranges, apples, lemons, and other round fruits gather in the lower part, while a bunch of yellow bananas unfurls in its characteristic curve on the right. The blue background, crossed by dark greenish vertical forms, creates depth and makes the vivid colors of the ensemble stand out.

As a genre, still life arranges everyday objects to create a concentrated experience of color, form, and substance. Here, flowers and fruit do not appear as isolated elements, but as a scene of abundance carefully gathered on the table. The composition needs no historical or religious narrative to hold our interest: its subject lies in the coexistence of plants, fruit, and domestic objects, as well as in the energy with which each element contributes to the whole. The bouquet, rising above the fruit, establishes a relationship between growth, fullness, and harvest.

The multicolored flowers convey a sense of vitality and sensory variety, while the abundance of fruit suggests plenty. Oranges and apples offer compact volumes and warm colors; the bananas, with their elongated, overlapping forms, add a curving rhythm that contrasts with the bouquet’s verticality. The blue background can be read as a field of contrast that visually separates the flowers and foliage, intensifying their colors. Rather than depicting a specific setting, the dark shapes in the background help focus attention on the richness of the gathered objects.

The horizontal structure of the table supports the painting’s visual weight, while the bouquet introduces an ascending axis that guides the eye from the fruit to the flowers. The curve of the bananas balances this upward movement on the right and keeps the composition from becoming rigid. The warm colors—reds, yellows, oranges, and pinks—vibrate against the blues and greens of the surroundings. The visible brushwork lends movement even to the motionless objects: the petals open in quick strokes, the leaves gather in green patches, and the fruit gains presence through color contrasts rather than meticulous outlines. The result is dense, luminous, and dynamic.

In this Still Life, Konstantin Korovin displays the qualities for which his painting is widely recognized: vibrant color, loose brushwork, and a luminosity close to the Impressionist sensibility. The scene transforms an everyday gathering of flowers and fruit into a highly energetic pictorial structure, in which the subject seems to spill beyond the edges of the table. It is worth observing how the bouquet and the bananas establish two complementary movements—one ascending and the other curving—while the fruit anchors the composition on the lower surface. The painting’s vitality lies in this tension between abundance, contrast, and rhythm.
