Description

The painting shows a tall red lattice tower rising along the central axis of the composition. Its framework of vertical and diagonal beams includes a large arch at the bottom, platforms, walkways and open supports that reveal the structure from a low upward perspective. Around this architecture unfold curved, volumetric shapes in beige, gray, pale blue and white, while a pale disc is set against the upper right area. Schematic lines traverse the space and, in the lower left corner, a handwritten inscription adds a graphic mark to the scene.

Within Robert Delaunay’s work, the tower belongs to the imaginary of architectural modernity and engineering transformed into a pictorial motif. The artist devoted numerous works to the Eiffel Tower and to the visual transformations of the modern city, but here the architecture is not presented as a literally described building. In Simultaneous Tower, the recognizable structure is articulated through planes of color, overlapping curves and rhythms, in keeping with a sensibility linked to Orphism. The work thus places the building in a dynamic experience, where seeing means perceiving at once matter, space, movement and light.

The tower functions as an image of technological modernity: its metallic skeleton makes the logic of construction visible and turns engineering into a visual event. The arch and walkways introduce an almost traversable scale, although no figures occupy the space; the viewer mentally moves through its levels and ascends them. Around the structure, the curved forms act as expansive forces that disrupt its geometric stability. The white disc focuses attention like an abstract light source, while the contrast between the tower’s red and the cool and earthy tones of the surroundings intensifies the tension between structure, atmosphere and movement.

The composition is vertical, centered and ascending. The diagonals of the framework guide the eye from the splayed legs and the arch toward the upper platforms, creating an uninterrupted path to the top edge of the painting. Opposing that linear discipline, the background introduces broad curves, enveloping patches and shifts in direction that prevent the architecture from becoming isolated. The rust-red acts as the chromatic focal point and holds the tower together, while beige, gray, blue and white build depth by contrast rather than through conventional perspective. Handwritten, schematic lines extend the drawing beyond the structure and make the space seem still in the process of transformation.

The work condenses essential features of Robert Delaunay’s language: an interest in modern architecture, a dynamic fragmentation of space and a conception of color based on rhythm and simultaneous contrasts. The tower remains unmistakably present, but ceases to be a mere object and becomes a field of relationships between diagonals, circles, planes and voids. It is worth observing how the lower arch anchors the composition while the surrounding curves set it in motion. In that friction between the solidity of metal and the fluidity of color lies the strength of Simultaneous Tower: an architecture to be contemplated as form, but also as visual energy.
