Description

The painting depicts Noah among the animals in a wooded landscape of extraordinary abundance. A large tree trunk rises in the left foreground, and its branches, together with the vegetation on both banks, frame a luminous clearing. In the center, a light-colored structure stands beside a waterfall that flows down into a pond populated by swans, herons, ducks and other water birds. On the right, a white horse dominates the foreground, while the bearded old man, dressed in a light-colored robe and with one arm raised, stands between the horse and a white dog. Lions, deer, an elephant, cattle, goats, flying birds and numerous smaller creatures complete a scene conceived as a vast theater of animal life.

The subject refers to the account in Genesis: in anticipation of the Flood, Noah is charged with building an ark and preserving his family and the animals in it. The gathering of land species, birds and creatures associated with water turns the landscape into a depiction of creation brought together under a single protection. The patriarchal figure in the foreground gives the episode its human dimension, while the architecture in the background and the flowing water concentrate the narrative at the center of the composition. The biblical account thus appears less as a scene of immediate action than as a moment of solemn anticipation, charged with abundance and threat.

The diversity of animal life underpins the work’s iconographic meaning. The horse, the felines, the deer, and the elephant offer an almost encyclopedic vision of the living world, while the birds crossing the sky visually connect the treetops with the surface of the pond. The water, present in the waterfall, the river, and the aquatic animals, directly evokes the Flood. Noah’s raised gesture sets him apart from the crowd and gives him the role of guide and guardian. Above all, the contrast between the dark forest and the central brightness articulates a tension between approaching danger and the promise of preservation.

The composition is arranged in a panoramic, almost symmetrical manner. The masses of vegetation at either side act as dark wings, drawing the eye toward the blue sky, the pale clouds, the waterfall, and the building on the horizon. Light is concentrated along the central axis, creating a series of receding planes: treetops and crags in the distance, animals among the vegetation, and large-scale figures in the foreground. The rhythm arises from the alternation of vertical trunks, diagonal branches, animal bodies, and undulating expanses of water. Greens and browns lend density to the forest, while whites, blues, golds, and reds introduce accents that guide the eye throughout the scene.

The work reflects Roelandt Savery’s interest in densely populated woodland landscapes, spatial imagination, and the meticulous observation of numerous animals. In his hands, the story of Noah becomes an expansive vision of nature: each creature contributes to a balance of inventory, movement, and narrative. Notice how the horse and the old man anchor the foreground, how the birds extend the gaze toward the sky, and how the waterfall leads it back to the earthly center. In this way, the painting brings together biblical history, zoological abundance, and a luminous composition that transforms the wait before the Flood into an image of fragile, solemn order.
