Description

The painting depicts The Flagellation of Christ, with Christ bound to a post that dominates the center of the composition. The bearded, half-naked figure wears a light cloth around his waist and is bound with ropes crossing his torso and arms. His tormentors stand on either side: the figure on the left, dressed in pink, raises one arm and extends the other toward the body being punished; the figure on the right, in a light tunic and red trousers, leans back while raising a dark instrument. Two narrow buildings, topped with roofs and domes, frame the scene against a golden background with a weathered texture.

The episode belongs to the cycle of the Passion of Christ and depicts the punishment inflicted on Jesus before the Crucifixion. His bonds focus the narrative on a moment of helplessness, while the two executioners turn the torment into a visible, active event. The scene needs no expansive narrative landscape: the post, the ropes and the gestures are enough to place the viewer before one of the moments of suffering, humiliation and redemptive sacrifice associated with Christian history. The architecture in the background provides a solemn, ceremonial setting and gives the event a devotional dimension that transcends any specific place.

The vertical post serves as a physical and spiritual axis. It divides the space, arranges the figures at either side and keeps Christ at the visual and narrative center, even as the tormentors take up dynamic positions on both sides. The ropes make the body's vulnerability visible, while also heightening the tension between stillness and violence: Christ remains restrained as the men's gestures bring movement around him. The gold background envelops the scene in a sacred, timeless radiance. Against this continuous surface, the buildings and their arcades add an architectural reference that intensifies the representation's ritual character.

The composition is frontal, symmetrical, and deliberately focused. The side towers act as vertical boundaries that extend the presence of the central post, while the decorated lower band provides a visual base for the figures. The strongly defined outlines clearly distinguish the bodies, garments, and instruments, making the action immediately legible. The colors—golden ochre, red, pale pink, cream, and reddish brown—distribute the visual weight without disrupting the unity of the surface. The flat lighting eliminates complex atmospheric depth and directs the eye toward the relationship between the bound body, the executioners’ hands, and the raised instrument.

The work is consistent with traits widely associated with Cimabue and with medieval Italian painting in the Byzantine tradition: a golden background, devotional frontality, figures with firm outlines, and a solemn structure centered on the sacred episode. Its intensity does not depend on developed spatial naturalism, but on the ritual arrangement of the bodies, the clarity of the gestures, and the hierarchy of the central axis. The violence of the episode is contained within a serene, orderly architecture, in a tension between punishment and ceremony that turns the scene into an image for contemplation. Every line and gesture leads back to the body of Christ, the still center of an action made solemn and timeless by the gold.
