Description

The painting Enclosed Field with Ploughman presents a sweeping agricultural landscape organised around an extensive ploughed field. Curving and diagonal furrows fill the foreground and lead towards a raised path crossing the scene. In the middle distance on the right, a dark, horse-like animal accompanies a human figure engaged in fieldwork, while another figure walks along the path. A group of tall trees frames the left side; in the distance, an isolated farmhouse stands against a range of blue mountains, beneath a yellow sun dominating the horizon.

The work belongs to the tradition of rural landscapes centred on working the land. The ploughman, the draft animal and the path make the field an active space, connected to the daily rhythms of peasant life rather than an uninhabited natural setting. The house and mountains extend the scene into an inhabited, cultivated environment: the small figures’ activity forms part of a broader territory in which agriculture, dwellings and terrain are visually integrated.

The ploughman beside the animal provides a human scale by which to gauge the immensity of the fields, and concentrates the composition’s narrative meaning. The furrows function both as traces of agricultural labour and as lines that guide the eye towards the horizon. The yellow sun intensifies the landscape’s luminous quality and creates a focal point of colour against the bands of earth. The isolated house and mountains balance the scene’s horizontality, while the trees introduce verticality, structuring the left edge and reinforcing the sense of depth.

Formally, the painting is constructed from bands of intense color—turquoise greens, ochres, violets, browns, and reds—that sweep across the terrain in directional brushstrokes. The surface vibrates because each furrow retains its own curved or diagonal movement, and because the distant slopes repeat this rhythm on a more remote scale. The path acts as a visual pause between the foreground and the horizon, although the figures and the animal keep this middle ground active. The horizontal composition gains dynamism from the contrast between the expanses of fields, the vertical lines of the trees, and the radiant circle of the sun.

In keeping with Vincent van Gogh’s widely recognized treatment of the rural landscape, intense color and energetic brushwork transform an everyday scene into a vibrant visual experience. Nature and working the land appear united by a single rhythm: the furrows organize the space, the figures introduce a human presence, and the light connects the fields with the distant mountains. Far from being isolated, the small group of people becomes the focal point that gives meaning to the entire cultivated expanse.
