Description

The painting shows a scene of nude bathers gathered by the water in a wooded landscape that opens onto a distant, inhabited horizon. A central figure, standing with their back to the viewer, occupies the axis of the composition; around them, other figures sit, recline or stand upright on different planes. In the lower band, bodies rest on the bank and form a compact group, while several smaller figures extend the scene into the distance. Two dark birds are positioned over the central area, a white bird is near the water’s edge, and an elongated boat appears on the right. The distant buildings complete this natural setting for recreation. Alice Bailly’s work thus presents a serene, collective vision of a summer afternoon.

The subject belongs to the genre of outdoor leisure scenes: a group of people share a moment of rest in direct contact with nature. Nudity is not presented as an isolated episode, but as part of an unselfconscious interaction among bodies, water, vegetation and open sky. The varied poses—sitting, reclining, standing or leaning—suggest a shared pause rather than a single narrative action. The boat, birds and structures on the horizon place this gathering in a lived-in landscape, where the group’s intimacy coexists with signs of a wider world.

The central figure acts as a visual hinge between the bathers and the landscape. Her back offers viewers a point of identification, while also keeping her face out of the scene and encouraging a contemplative reading. The nude forms express bodily freedom and a direct connection with their surroundings, while the water lends a sense of continuity and repose. The birds reinforce the natural character of the scene, and the boat adds a note of unhurried passage. The contrast between the light skin, dark foliage and blue-green bands makes the landscape more than a background: it is the shared space that brings all the figures together and holds them in balance.

The horizontal composition is arranged in stepped planes. The central figure’s upright body establishes a firm axis, around which the more horizontal poses in the foreground are distributed. This interplay of verticality and repose creates a steady, almost musical visual rhythm, guiding the eye from the nearby bodies toward the water and the structures on the horizon. Dense trees frame the upper and left-hand sides, forming a mass of green, brown and grayish-black tones that makes the areas of skin and light-colored surfaces stand out. The palette of ochres, beige, muted greens and blue-green maintains a soft light, without sharp contrasts. Depth emerges from the overlapping figures, shorelines, water and distant landscape, while the signature in the lower-right corner discreetly brings the visual journey to a close.

In Summer Afternoon, Alice Bailly transforms an everyday scene of bathers into a densely populated, contemplative composition. The work does not rely on dramatic action, but on the relationship between the figures, the landscape, and the small signs of life along the shore. Notice how the figure seen from behind draws the eye and, at the same time, leads it back to the group: from there, the gaze moves to the reclining figures, follows the water, and reaches the boat and the buildings in the background. This structure turns summer leisure into a visual experience of freedom, repose, and shared communion with nature.
