The scene is connected with the tradition of John the Baptist as a prophetic figure and forerunner of Christ. Crimson red, luminous whites and ochres stand out against the masses of green, brown and black. In this way, the contrast between the concentrated crowd and the expansive landscape transforms the sermon into a large-scale visual event.
