Description

The work presents an abstract construction of space in which an arrangement of rectangular blocks occupies the lower third of the composition. The superimposed, tiered forms evoke an imaginary architecture: there are low volumes, narrow vertical elements, light-colored planes that protrude, and small scattered pieces extending toward the right edge. Above this grouping opens a broad, dark gray-green field, interrupted only by a reddish band at the top. In the upper-right area, isolated from the other elements, floats an oval disk made up of small cells of pink, orange, yellow, and violet. The title, Chosen Site, guides the interpretation toward a singular location, delineated within a silent, almost suspended landscape.

This is not a narrative scene in the traditional sense, but a visual meditation on the construction of a place. The lower grouping can be understood as an abstract settlement or an architecture reduced to its essential components: modules, columns, platforms, and fragments of wall. The surrounding space does not depict a specific geography; it functions as an open territory in which this small built nucleus takes on an exceptional presence. In this context, the title does not name a city or a recognizable point on the map, but proposes a spatial and conceptual idea: that of a selected site, set apart from the surrounding void and imbued with meaning by its very position.

The relationship between the elements creates a poetic iconography. The architectural ensemble evokes the idea of shelter, settlement, or boundary, while the large, dark background heightens its isolation. The gridded disk acts as a suspended counterpoint: its regular cells and luminous palette introduce a chromatic signal that can be read as a celestial sign, a distant object, or a purely imaginary form. The work keeps this element apart from any literal explanation, turning it into a balancing presence opposite the mass below. The separation between these two poles—the terrestrial structure and the floating disk—encourages a contemplative reading of orientation, distance, and belonging.

The vertical composition rests on an asymmetrical and carefully calculated arrangement. Visual weight is concentrated below, where the base’s horizontal lines and the accumulation of rectangles create stability, while the vertical elements introduce pauses and upward movement that prevent rigidity. The expansive negative space draws the eye upward and allows the disk on the right to serve as a secondary focal point. Dark outlines, overlapping planes, and modular fragmentation create depth without relying on conventional perspective. Against the grayish green and reddish brown, the small accents of pink, orange, yellow, and violet take on an almost luminous intensity. The red band at the top completes the chromatic balance and establishes a tension between the upper section and the terrestrial base.

In Chosen Site, Paul Klee approaches a poetic construction of space through geometric signs, expressive color, and symbolic ambiguity. Architecture appears not as a technical description, but as a language of forms capable of suggesting landscape, settlement, and thought all at once. The scene invites us to observe how a few blocks transform an empty field into a place, and how the gridded disk expands that space into an imaginary dimension. It is worth pausing over the distance between the two centers: there, in the void that separates them, the painting turns an arrangement of forms into an open, enigmatic, and carefully balanced vision.
