Description

The painting Another Arrangement, by Arthur Dove, presents an abstract composition built on a dominant black ground. In the upper central area a large elongated organic yellow form extends, its interior traversed by four vertical blue bands. Resting on it is an irregular-edged brown mass, while a rounded black shape occupies the upper right extremity. Yellow reappears broadly on the right side and in the lower half of the work, establishing an expansive color field. At the bottom, a horizontal white form, a wavering black mass and a blue curve partially cropped by the edge complete the assemblage. The small handwritten signature in the lower margin is part of the work’s material presence.

The title turns the idea of an “arrangement” into the painting’s organizing principle: it is not about depicting a recognizable scene, but about laying out forms, colors and rhythms within the plane. The work belongs to the field of modernist-oriented abstraction, in which observation of the world can be transformed into autonomous visual relationships. Rather than offering a figurative narrative, Arthur Dove articulates an experience based on the coexistence of flowing contours, compact planes and chromatic contrasts. The result is a synthetic construction in which each form participates in the overall balance without being subordinated to the description of a concrete object.

Yellow functions as the composition’s most expansive chromatic focus. The large upper shape and the yellow field on the right visually extend, guiding the eye through an open, dynamic structure. The blue bands introduce a regular rhythm within that dominant mass: their verticality segments the yellow and provides an orderly pause against the undulating contours. Overlays of black, white, brown and blue create a sense of assemblage, as if compact planes had come together to form a visual organism. The black background intensifies this effect and renders each color a crisp, isolated yet interdependent presence.

The composition is organized horizontally, although its curved and diagonal contours avoid rigidity. Visual weight is concentrated in the upper band and the large yellow field on the right, while the lower forms balance that expansion with lower, dense and fragmented masses. The alternation between broad surfaces and narrow accents produces a perceptual rhythm: the eye moves from the yellow expanse to the blue bands, descends to the white and black, and finally meets the blue curve at the lower edge. Depth does not rely on traditional perspective but on the overlapping of planes and scale differences between forms. In this way the painting sustains a constant tension between stability and movement.

This work exhibits features associated with Arthur Dove’s modernist abstraction: organic forms, rhythms akin to those of nature, and a chromatic construction that does not need to depict the world literally to suggest vitality. Another Arrangement turns the arrangement of elements into its own subject and makes visible how a group of flat shapes can acquire direction, weight and cadence. Pay special attention to the relationship between the upper yellow form and the blue bands that cross it: here the dialogue between expansion and restraint that underpins the entire composition is concentrated. From that nucleus, the black, white, brown and blue planes organize a precise, intense abstract experience in constant equilibrium.
