Description

The artwork presents a vertically oriented geometric abstract composition organized around a central axis of bars, bands and lines of varying widths. A large reddish-orange semicircle stands out against the nearly black background, extending across the upper part as a dominant, expansive shape. Below it, a group of vertical rectangles brings together golden yellows, reds, blues, ivory whites, greenish beiges and dark tones. Several narrow lines run through this arrangement, while three gray curved bands overlap in the lower area and cross the structure like suspended arcs. In this work by Ilya Chashnik, every element contributes to a rigorous construction, while the composition as a whole retains a distinctly dynamic visual energy.

As an abstract painting, Vertical Axes in Motion does not develop a narrative scene or depict recognizable figures. Its context lies in the exploration of form, color and the relationship between geometric planes. The title guides the viewer toward two principles made visible by the composition: the verticality of the central bars and the sense of movement created by the rhythms, overlapping forms and curves. In this way, the artwork turns an almost architectural arrangement into an open visual experience, in which order does not eliminate tension but keeps it active.

The vertical bars function as a rhythmic structure that focuses attention and supports the balance of the image. The orange-red semicircle introduces a powerful chromatic counterpoint: its breadth and position near the top offset the linear concentration of the central core, as if an expansive form were responding to the discipline of the rectangles. Below, the overlapping gray bands suggest layers, waves, or transverse paths. Their course interrupts the vertical axis and adds depth, as well as an impression of visual movement. The dark background acts as a containing field that makes each color stand out and focuses the eye on the interaction of the forms.

The composition is built through carefully graded contrasts. The verticals create stability, upward movement, and repetition; the curves introduce variation, fluidity, and a lateral direction that cuts across the image. From the outset, the upper semicircle establishes a broad chromatic focal point, but the central bars then draw the eye toward a sequence of changes in scale, color, and proportion. The intense hues take on greater presence against the blue-black background, while the gray bands below create a transitional zone between the vertical structure and the lower edge. The approximate symmetry organizes the whole without making it mechanical: small differences between the stripes create pauses, accents, and depth through overlapping.

The work’s strength lies in transforming elementary geometric forms into an experience of rhythm and tension. Without relying on figurative representation, Ilya Chashnik creates a space in which the lines seem to advance, pause, and cross one another again. Observe how the red semicircle dominates the upper section, how the bars form the painting’s axis, and how the gray arcs alter its stability from the foreground. The key to the work lies in this interplay between vertical rigor and curved displacement: a geometry that remains ordered yet never stops moving before the viewer’s eyes.
