Description

The painting shows the resurrected Christ at the center of an open, monumental scene. Standing in a light-colored tunic with long hair, he raises one hand in a gesture of proclamation while holding a banner of light and red stripes beside a vertical pole. The figure stands within a large stone portal, whose blocks and side supports form a solemn frame. At his feet, a rectangular slab crosses the foreground diagonally, surrounded by several fallen soldiers in armor and garments of red, blue, gold and orange. Beyond the ruins, the landscape stretches toward hills, roads, trees and distant buildings beneath a luminous sky.

The scene depicts the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a central event in the Christian faith that followed the Crucifixion. In the artistic tradition, Christ appears beside the tomb as the victor over death, often accompanied by a banner proclaiming his triumph. The tomb’s guards are usually shown fallen, asleep or disoriented by the miracle. Here, their prone bodies create an immediate narrative contrast with Christ’s serene uprightness, while the large stone in the foreground evokes the open tomb and the threshold between death and renewed life.

The meaning of the work is expressed through clear contrasts. The central figure, illuminated and upright, is visually set apart from the horizontal mass of soldiers, transformed into an image of the defeat of earthly power. The banner serves as a sign of victory and proclamation, and its red color introduces an intense note amid the palette of whites, ochres and grayish blues. The diagonal slab focuses attention on the event and leads the eye from the lower edge toward Christ. At the same time, the luminous landscape extends the sense of liberation beyond the stone enclosure: the roads, hills and trees open the scene onto an idea of renewal.

The composition is organized around a strong vertical axis. The monumental arch encloses and emphasizes the figure of Christ, while the columns and flanking ruins balance the space and add depth. By contrast, the slab introduces a dynamic diagonal that disrupts the architectural stability and draws the eye toward the armed bodies in the foreground. The fallen figures form a horizontal band of colors and armor, set against the uninterrupted brightness of the central robe. The clearly defined contours, the interplay between stone surfaces and open landscape, and the alternation of solid masses and luminous areas create a gradual reading, from the immediate drama of the tomb to the open horizon.

The work is consistent with the Sienese devotional painting associated with Benvenuto Di Giovanni: it features precise drawing, luminous colors, elegant figures, and a religious narrative integrated with a detailed landscape and architecture with an archaic appearance. Its solemnity depends not only on the subject, but also on the way the arch makes Christ the visual center and the slab leads the narrative toward the viewer. Notice how the banner, the stone, and the fallen soldiers create a sequence of victory: from the tomb and the death depicted in the foreground to the upright figure and the open landscape, which herald a new dimension of life.
