Description

The painting shows Saint Jerome seated in a stark, dark space, made monumental by the scale of his body and the intensity of the light falling on him. The saint appears old and bearded, with his torso bare and a red cloth draped over his legs. One hand is raised toward his face in a gesture of contemplation, while the other arm reaches down toward the foreground. Behind him, in the upper-left area, a crucifix rises; beside the figure, a large book and a skull rest on the cloth and the earthy ground. The scene brings together body, objects and shadow in a composition with a powerful physical presence.

Saint Jerome belongs to the tradition of the learned, penitent saint, depicted in retreat to meditate on faith, death and the sacrifice of Christ. He is one of the principal saints and Doctors of the Christian Church, and his figure is traditionally associated with the study of Scripture and the translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate. The book thus introduces an intellectual dimension that complements the austerity of the body and its surroundings. In a single moment of silence, the image brings together the ascetic devoted to knowledge and the man who has withdrawn from the world to contemplate his spiritual destiny.

The attributes convey the meaning of the scene without the need for a secondary narrative. The book alludes to study, scholarship and the biblical work associated with the saint; the skull introduces meditation on death and the fragility of existence; the crucifix establishes the horizon of Christian devotion and penitence. The red cloth adds a note of intensity and drama, enveloping the lower part of the body like a field of color that makes the ascetic nudity of the torso more visible. The faint arc around the back of the head visually reinforces the figure’s focus without competing with the principal symbols.

The vertical composition is organized around a diagonal that rises from the arm and book in the foreground to the saint’s head. The crucifix balances the upper left and prevents the visual weight from shifting entirely toward the central figure. The black and brown tones of the background absorb the peripheral contours, while golden ochres illuminate the face, arms, and floor. Against this shadowy backdrop, crimson red serves as a striking visual pause. The brushwork and the modeling of light create a tangible body, with aged skin and musculature still present, and make the symbolic objects gradually emerge from the gloom.

In this work by Luciano Borzone, the intensity comes not from a crowded scene but from the closeness between the body, the signs of faith, and the surrounding darkness. The painting turns Saint Jerome into a nucleus of light, skin, fabric, and earthy material: a man of study and penance, suspended between contemplation of the book and awareness of death. Observe how the gaze first moves across the face and torso, descends toward the skull and the book, and then returns to the crucifix. This journey connects knowledge, sacrifice, and transience in a single visual construction.
